Pearl Necklaces
My sister and I have two pearl necklaces that were given to us by our parents when we became teenagers. They told us that pearl necklaces are exquisite and beautiful just as we were. We took care of them, careful not to wear them just around school and hanging out with friends but for special occasions.
Those pearl necklaces always symbolized the special feelings our parents had for us and when we wore them it was as if they were reminders that we were just what our parents had claimed: exquisite and beautiful. So when my daughter's thirteenth birthday began to approach, I wanted to continue that tradition of love and understanding.
I went online and looked at several pearl necklaces. One in particular seemed to reach out to me and I just knew that was the one meant to be hers. When it arrived, I wrapped it and sat down to write her a letter. I told her the story of the two pearl necklaces her grandparents had given to her aunt and I, how they were special and why. I told her how wonderful and exquisite and beautiful she was and that although it was her birthday, I was the one who had truly been given the greatest gift: her. My daughter loves her necklace and takes care of it to this day. I think, should she have a daughter when she grows up, the tradition may very well pass on.
